Therapy Dog – Training Geared to Share Love

Therapy Dogs (TD) are encouraged to interact with various people while they are on duty. Therapy animals are brought to places such as hospitals, nursing homes, homeless shelters, colleges and universities, schools, libraries, airports, areas affected by disasters, and private homes.
If you are interested in training for Therapy you would start in our beginner obedience classes. Once moved up to advanced classes your team will work on the extended therapy curriculum. When handler/dog team are ready, we will test you for the CGCU (Urban Canine Good Citizen), this is an AKC title and public access test. This curriculum, and the CGCU, will prepare trainer/handler teams to successfully pass the TDI (Therapy Dog International) or AKC Therapy Dog certifications. Basic-Advanced obedience, temperament tested and the following skill set will help set your Therapy Dog Team up for success:

- Tolerant of being Hugged, Cuddled, and Handled
- Ignores Food and Obeys “Leave It”
- Ability to Navigate through Medical Equipment
- Public Access Training (CGCU)
- Socialized with Adults, Children, & Animals
- Nonreactive to the Public and Strangers
- Focused, Quiet, and Dutiful
- Able to Retain Information
